It's easy to understand why Jim has taken this approach. GemCraft, a popular strategic board game, is unlike most of games of its type. But where Newgrounds attracted developers primarily by offering a wide audience, Kongregate hopes to do more to nurture the developers that bring them their audience. Newgrounds has long been a popular portal for people seeking out Flash games, and even launched the popular Alien Hominid. Its creators, Jim Greer and his sister Emily, describe it as the "YouTube of games" an easy, instant way to find something new. The site hopes to be a destination for aspiring developers to cut their teeth and share their work with the world. Now, a relatively newer site called Kongregate is hoping to do the same for independent game developers. The internet has done more to connect creators to their audience than any medium in history, and accessible platforms like YouTube and Break have done much to level the playing field. Bands once relied completely on record labels to get their music out to the masses. It used to be that anyone hoping to make a show, video, or a home movie would have next to no chance of showing it to anyone unless they stopped by and sat in his living room.
